Are you Experienced

by William Sutcliffe

Penguin; £5.99

The quotes on this book all seem to use the word funny, which I take issue with. Funny does not begin to describe this book. I could use all the clichés, like how I was unable to put this book down and how I attracted stares from people on the train as I laughed out loud, they would all be true.

How I managed to pick up this book in the first place was as accident. I intended to buy the Beach at the time when everyone was reading it, but unable to find it and facing a 6 hour train journey I picked this up in desperation. How lucky I did.

The book follows Dave as he takes a gap year to go to India with Liz. Liz is going to find herself and Dave, well, because he thinks it will be his best chance to get her into bed. Inevitably it doesn't all go to plan and Dave soon realises that he hates where he is. Along his travels in search of spirituality, love and a decent meal he meets a number of other travellers, who have little knowledge of the culture or continent and with most of Millets in their rucksacks. Some of them are obnoxious and pretentious others funny and loveable, which leads to some very funny (and bizarre) moments.

What makes this book exceptionally good is the realism of the characters. Dave isn't your tall, good looking, suave hero. He would possibly best be described as a bit of a tosser and a little bit sad, yet through the situations you can't help but feel an affinity for the guy. Anyone who has spent any time having to listen to people talk about their travels to find themselves will love this book. The satirical look at travelling will captivate everyone else.
