The first of the so called "Autobiographical books" by Robert Rankin. Laced with a mixture of truth and fiction its hard to tell at times where one begins and the other finishes. But as with all the other Rankin books, genius shines through. How he comes up with all the different topics he discusses in the book is beyond me. But I'm sure it involves sitting in a pub and listening intently to every word that’s said to him, and possibly recording it on tape as well! This is a tale about the Rankin family and how the Robert Rankin we know and love turned out the way he did. It also has a tale of family betrayal, and an extraordinary stage act called Carlos the Chaos Butterfly. Barry the time travelling sprout makes a welcome appearance, as do the running gags and spot on observations. If you are a Rankin fan and this one isn't on your book shelf then shame on you. You can either stand in a corner and feel ashamed of yourself or go and order this book now. Reviewed by David V.Baker |
