The Brentford Chainstore Massacre

by Robert Rankin

Corgi; 365pp; £5.99

The fifth novel in the Brentford Trilogy, Robert Rankin has not only written a great book but also given Pooley and Omally a new lease of life. They are still the same work shy anti-hero’s that we all love. But for Jim things will never be the same. And that means for John, things will never be the same as he is about to lose his friend. Jim seems to have fallen in love. Could this be the end of the famous duo. The greatest crime fighting team since Batman and Robin. Since The lone Ranger and Tonto. Since Fred and Ginger?

And will his new found love do even more damage by taking his mind off of the events that are happening in Brentford.

The Millennium is coming and Jim has found an ancient scroll that lets Brentford celebrate the event two years early grabbing all the millennium funds. John is in his element here, founding new companies all over the place. All curiously baring his name. The Millennium commission is put out to say the least. What with the treasurer being part of Satan’s flock. So will he have to kill Jim and John to get things back on track?

But just when you think its safe to have evil on one front, another adversary is here too. The deranged Dr. Steven Malone is playing with DNA strands of the dried blood of Jesus found on the Turn Shroud. What will his creations be like and will Malone’s madness be the end for all.

The fifth book has come quite a while after the fourth so needless to say Rankins style, like a fine wine has improved with age. It doesn’t quite read like the first four books, but has every quality that Rankin fans have come to expect. Enjoy
