Large Event

A huge event is planned to celbrate the creation of the worlds finest beer.

The date for this monumental event is set for Saturday 31st of January 2004,
in Derby, East Midlands. The main focus of the evening is the world premier
launching of the Robert Rankin inspired beer ? ?Large?. This epic new drink
is to be brewed for us by a Nottingham based brewery called ?Castle Rock? and will initially be available in the
Alexandra Hotel (The Alex) on
Siddals Road in Derby, this is very near the Train station.
For one night only ?The Alex? will become ?The Flying Swan? and will be
referred to as ?The Swan? throughout this article. January the 31st will be
Cowboy night at The Swan as featured in The Antipope. Everyone is invited to
join our very special guest, Robert Rankin, for a pint or more of Large and
it is hoped Robert will pull the 1st official pint of Large for us. Robert
has also designed the artwork for pump clip himself, along with some beer
mats & T-shirts too. The best dressed Cowboy (or Cowgirl) will win a prize,
it?s only a bit of fun though, you don?t have to dress up if you don?t want

The evening will also feature a pub quiz, to be split into 2 rounds, the
?Music Round? and the ?General Knowledge & Works of Robert Rankin Round?.
And there will also be a raffle, so come prepared to join in and you may
even win a prize. Other entertainment?s we have planned for the night
include: a close up magician will be wandering round entertaining people,
there will be a buffet during the evening, we will have some Beer related
talks from Paul Wooding of the Castle Rock Brewery & from Robert Rankin and
a Captain Laser Alien Attack machine. Also Matt should be bringing along
some VCD recordings of the fun that was had at the recent ?They Came and
Shaved Us? Convention in Ireland, for people to get a hold of.

I?ll not say too much about the specifics of Beer itself here as that will
spoil the surprise on the day. Everyone imagines ?Large? differently because
everyone?s idea of the perfect pint is different. But it will be a ?Real Ale
? as served by Neville in the Swan and Robert has described it himself as
being dark, light, bitter, pale, lagerish, porterish, weak, strong, frothy
and flat, so now you all know what your in for.

For those of you wishing to kick off the weekend early we will be gathering
in the ?Babbington Arms? on Friday 30th from about 6:30pm. This is a
Wetherspoons in Derby city centre, it?s located on Babbington Lane (please
be aware if asking directions that Derby has 2 Wetherspoons and you do not
want the one called ?The Standing Order?.)

Accommodation is obviously a priority for those of you wishing to travel to
Derby so with that in mind here are some suggestions:
