Issue 16 - 2002-10-25

Hi All,

Another longish mail I am afraid!

Well there is much going on, Robert will be at an A-Team convention next spring, and then in Sweden next September for Rancon.

Most importantly though is the tenth anniversary of Sproutlore, 2003 being the year of that anniversary. We are having an absolute blinder of an event, with Robert as Master of ceremonies, and lots of Rankin related stuff going on.

Please join ASAP, as it is a limited event.

I hope you all consider going along.

They Came and Shaved Us will be running literally non-stop from Friday the 24th of October until Sunday night the 26th. It will be a feast of all things fun, weird and wondrous.

It is a fun convention; there will be lot of running around, very strange discussions and activities, such as eating snake. Consider carefully before joining, as it is not for the light-hearted or anyone who is easily offended.

Robert Rankin is our Master of Ceremonies and we intend to have an interesting selection of guests and speakers to help us through the weekend. The event will be taking place in Ireland, coincidentally the ancestral home of Sproutlore, which celebrates ten years of existence in 2003.

We intend to touch upon such subjects as... Victorian late 19th century, H.P. Lovecraft, The League of Gentlemen, Nemesis, Freak Shows, Crowley, Carnival of Horror / Chaos, Escapologists, Ripley's Believe it or Not, Weird Food, Various Show and Tells, Dangerous Sports, Sprout Stamping... A lot of this will tie in rather nicely with Robert's next book.

Robert will be doing a number of special talks, and we also hope to have biographers of some of some other humorous writers. There will be an auction, a raffle, a look a collection of Victoriana, and much, much more. It will be a real party, with 3 discos over the course of the weekend, that will involve lots of dressing up (and some singing too).

We have a limited number of places so please join up as soon as you can to avoid disappointment (it's unlikely that we'll be taking memberships on the door due to this limitation).

More details are available on our website:

Fairways Hotel lies slightly south of the town of Dundalk, itself located halfway between Dublin and Belfast. We have booked 'The Library' and the 'Old Disco' as our convention space. The Library is a normal function room, with a small stage and bar and will be our main room for the weekend. The Disco is of early 80s design (so some of us will feel right at home there), and there are cosy alcoves that can be used for smaller, informal talks and workshops. Plus there's a sunken dance floor that looks rather like a gladiatorial arena: we will be finding uses for this! Joining the two rooms is a lobby area, at the end of which there is the main hotel bar, reception and restaurants. We also have the use of an enclosed garden (and a rear car park should we desire it).

Fairways has a number of eating options: From noon until 3pm daily there is a Carvery, with main meals costing around euro10 / Sterling 6.40. From 5pm until 10pm the same area turns into 'The Grill', where a main course is about euro14 / 9. The main restaurant offers a four-course meal, from 5pm until 9.30pm for euro 32 / 20. The bar serves sandwiches, a plate of which costs about euro 4 / 2.50

The hotel boasts a large number of bars (when we were there we saw at least eight); The Managing Director has assured us that there will be no shortage of Drink. We will have a bar in the main room, which will be open until about 1pm each night, and drink will be available in the main hotel bar later. A pint of Guinness costs about euro3.35 / 2.14, a vodka is euro2.90 / 1.85, a cola is euro 2 / 1.28 and a cordial is euro0.80 / 50p.

Room Rates:
We have organised a special deal for room rates. You must use the Hotel Booking Form provided. There are 45 standard and 56 deluxe rooms in the hotel. We have held all the standard rooms and a number of deluxe rooms, but first come first served, so please book ASAP: the rooms will only be held for a limited time. A credit card booking or a deposit of 50% is required to book the rooms. The hotel understands that we want our rooms to be grouped together and that we want the standard rooms to go first, so please book early.

Standard twin/double room: Two nights euro200 / 128, three nights euro300 / 192 (euro50 / 32 per person per night)
Deluxe twin/double room: Two nights euro230 / 147, three nights euro345 / 220 (euro57.50 / 36 per person per night)
