If I knew who any of them are I'd be putting down a smart comment right now rather than this dribble.

Welcome and goodnight then.

I don't know the people, though I'm not sure if I've heard of them in passing or am just making that up.

Billie Holiday for I know who she was and a little of her interesting life and think that singing Strange Fruit even though it was emotionally draining and the movement it was part of was something of an achievement.

Who's best at what though?

I think Nina Simone is the best singer, but I hear Ella Fitzgerald was a demon at lighting her own farts.

Billie Holiday is by far the greatest when listening to her before the drugs and everything wrecked her voice. Her life story is indeed facinating and i've always wanted to open a pub called Alice Deans, all red velvet curtains and plush carpets which is the way i imagine the said whore house where Billies mother cleaned and she sang at the piano loOked like. The swan pub in Hammersmith was just like this before Edwards wrecked it and made it another piss poor chain pub.

Blilly didn't think much of Ella saying she found her fame by singing popular music for the white man. I loved Ella in Berlin though especially when she forgets the words to mack the knife.

I can never forgive Nina Simone for wasting 35 of my hard earned cash by coming on stage starting to sing my baby just cares for me then running off stage half way through in a fit of tears and leaving us for the next 45 minutes to listen to that boring up her own arse poet Maya Angelou before coming back on stage singing two more songs and telling us all that, that was our lot.

You seem to have missed Sarah Vaughn off your list who i would place a close second behind Billie Holiday.

Ah yes, Sarah Vaughan is Mick's sovereign Goddess. I happened to be on the phone with him when I read this and he said that his personal favourite was Nina Simone, but that Billie Holiday had more impact on music. Of course, if Sarah Vaughan had been on offer there would have been no hesitation or equivocation involved.

Personally, I just love, love, love Ella. I agree that Mack the Knife is fun, and she also forgets the words to How High the Moon in the same show. Great album, but my favourite of hers is Ella Sings Duke Ellington. Now, she did two albums like that, one with an orchestra and one with the Oscar Peterson Trio and the trio one is the best. I think it is one of the best albums ever recorded and would definitely put it on a desert island list.
