While I live in Oregon USA, this weekend will be one of British rock for me. I am going to see two of Sheffield's best over the coming week: Gomez on Friday night and Artic Monkeys on Monday night.

So here is the rub: My as-yet-single best mate is coming in from Minneapolis to visit and is a music nut. He sees more concerts and buys more CDs in a month than I do all year (OK so being single well into adulthood does have a few advantages). I will never best him in terms of being hip or up on the latest.

So...can any of you offer any gems about either of these bands that I might drop in conversation that would impress, stun or otherwise amaze him?

We will be drinking heavily, so please keep it simple... Many thanks!

Sheffield is the home of ROCK being the birthplace of such people as Def Leppard and Pulp and Joe Cocker.

You could also tell him about Sheffield Cutlery. Yep. Spoons and stuff.

I think Chicago is just about my favourite city for music, currently:

Allister (Their new album ROCKS!)
Screeching Weasel
Apocalypse Hoboken
And so on...

Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco are the exceptions to this rule Laughing

Well, thanks all for the tips; I think I scored a couple of trivia points. Both bands were AWESOME! Well worth the ticket price.

What's a dinnerlady?

The lady who serves you dinner in the cafeteria at school. Can't for the life of me remember what we call them in America.

Oddly enough, I've always called them lunch ladies.

My mother, who grew up on a farm in Iowa, never had a meal called lunch either. They had breakfast, dinner and supper.

I didn't think it was a Northern thing, Lisa. I just assumed lunch was an Americanism, like couch.

I've always thought the more meals the better.
Breakfast is the meal you eat first; then elevenses, brunch, lunch, tea, dinner then supper.
