It's a bit of a misleading name really, as there were five of them altogether and there are drums and saxes involved, and robots and special effects and many many costume changes and wonderful wondeful good old fashioned madness.. And last night we went to see them at the Komedia in Brighton and had one of the most enjoyable nights at a gig I can remember. They were brilliant, Mr Slater (and we all sang along and did parrot "hello"s) Sam Spoons and Roger Ruskin Spear, and they performed the Bonzo's classics, Hunting Tigers, Jollity Farm. I'm Bored, well two full hours worth, for old geezers they worked hard, and I really can't remember when I smiled so much and laughed so much. And afterwards we got to chat to them all and like the sad fanboy I am I got their autographs. Absolute bliss and far better than the big reunion gigs of a couple of years ago. Check them out on the interweb, they have more gigs to play around the country and if they come to a venue near you GO AND SEE THEM.
I first saw the Bonzos in 1969 when I had a hand in booking them to play the end of term dance for Ealing School of Art. We booked them and they played Acton Town Hall. We were offered other bands by the booking agents, but we couldn't afford them. Jimi Hendrix was £750, the Cream £650. but the Bonzos were only £450, so we could afford them. I swear I am not making that up.
Cheers. |

Nor me and I love the Bonzos. I have the "Cornology" CD boxset nestled in my CD rack downstairs. Be hard pressed to pick a favourite although I prefer "Gorilla" to the other albums.
Mr Slaters Parrot came up on random on the iPod today too |
