From an email I got at work today..

HASSRA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Art

London, our members did very well in HASSRA’s National Art championship. The Region retained the David Elgar Trophy Oils and Acrylics. Hugh Morris (Wembley) was runner-up in the class with ‘Author and Rock God Robert Rankin’.

I was too late to enter this competition last year but got the national runners up spot in this years competition. Never enterd anything like this before and it was judged by real artists who own a real Gallery so i'm quite chuffed. I don't think I get anything but still made my day to get the email today. Very Happy

Can't seem to resize it to a size accepted on this site so here's a link to my Facebook Album.

Only A4. Its a piece of board I nicked from my daughters art kit.

I've just looked at the entry that won last year which is by the same lady that won this year and have a feeling the she may have gone to art school as her oil painting looks like a photograph. Makes mine look like the amaturish attempt it is but I'm still chuffed. Apparently I get a certificate Wooo Hooo.

Well Hugh, I for one always get a bit suspicious when the same person wins something two years running. I think Dave Langford owns something like 30 Hugo awards, etc. So let's just assume the worse and that the woman traced her work from a photograph and leave it at that.
You, however, are a star! Very Happy

No point in creating a painting that looks like a photo, that's not creative. A photocopier could do the same. Your painting has passion, character and soul which can only come from a human hand and is how art should be.

Thanks Guys.

I'm a big fan of the BP portrait award and my fantasy dream would be to enter and if not win the judges vote at least win the peoples choice award. I really stand in awe of someone who can reproduce an image in oils or acrylic that requires you to move within an inch of the canvas to confirm that there are infact brush strokes on the canvas but allways vote for the painting that has the most unusual composition or capture the real mood of the moment.

The first time I took my daughter (she was aged 5) we had to leave the gallery because she got more and more upset because she wanted to see paintings and not photographs and would not believe me when I tried to explain how they were done. She had a right strop and almost punched one of the paintings Very Happy We try to go most years now she's a bit older and I allways tell her we'll do a banksy one day and sneak one of our own paintings on to the wall.
