Faint hum and that's not a Ho-Hum, after all the years of road noise in a full face helmet, and seriously loud rock music at gigs and concerts at my age I'm a little surprised as I am a little mutton on the higher frequencies. Shocked

Yay!! I am actually doing a PhD on sound/noise related stuff.

The tone is around 15khz.

Most people can hear from about 15Hz to 20kHz when they are young. (cds can play/hold tones of up to 22.1kHz)

But hearing, like many things, is different for everyone.

If you are in your mid-30's or older, and have been subjected to a fair amount of loud music or noise in your life, you may not be able to hear the tone.

I think I can hear up to around 16.5 or 17kHz (at volume), I am 36. (checked mine on good gear about a year ago)

Should be noted that hearing it is not only dependant on you ears, but also on the speakers or headphones you are using.

If you can't hear it on "monitor" speakers or headphones, you probably can't hear it. Obviously, everyone's hearing degrades over time.

Apparently, tones like this are used in some locations to keep young people from loitering (railway stations, places where graffiti or other youth related anti-social behaviour is common, some shops or shopping centers etc). Also sometimes used by younger people as a mobile phone ringtone, so that teachers or parents don't hear the phone when it is not set to silent.

(obviously I could go on...)

nothing witty here
