Being bored one eveninig, which is, quite often, i took a look though the member list... it looks to me that there are quite a number of peeps on the list who have never posted, or posted once and vanished... I haven't seen Deakie recently, has someone else taken over the basement where all the newbies are kept as battery-sock-knitters?

I had to read that last bit twice as it confused me why you'd want to knit socks for batteries Grin

I think this is just the way of the Interweb Forum, you'll always get a large number of "Lurkers", perhaps people who didn't know where to jump in once they'd signed up?

I hate lurkers myself. I get a lot of lurkers at my blog. I wish they would comment, even if it was to say they thought my blog sucked.

I guess lurkers are the same sort of people who go into stores and just look around but never buy anything.

It's called window shopping!... but most of these newbie names are random, like the ones you get from spammers trying to overcome email filters... i sense they may not be being used for forum-type interractions...

Correct - most of them are indeed attempted spammers. They get through the initial registration process, so they appear in the memberlist, but they never complete the process because they can't get past the email verification, so they can never actually logon and post their spam. We are aware of it, but there's no easy way to clean them up other than by checking each one and deleting them, which is rather time-consuming.

I hold my hand up as something of a ghost member. I swoop in, make a sarcastic haunting, then disappear into the ether.

These spam members aren't just targetting here. If you Google the occupation on them Technik Rybołustwa, or the location on the others, Nowe Misato, you'll see there's literally hundreds of message boards with them listed on them.

I think they're to make people click on the web sites in the profiles. I had a virus not long after looking at one, I'm not sure if it's a coincidence. I'd advise that you don't go checking out any of them just in case.

well I'm a lurker and this is my first post. My lurking has become so bad that I didn't even register a username for the first few months of lurking.

I think the thing with forums is that once you've read a few posts, it becomes clear who the central, driving force of the board is. It's normally a group of 5 or 6 people, and together they form what can basically be equated to "the cool kids" at school. It is a daunting prospect, attempting to breach the inner circle and find acceptance. The more like a clique this group acts, the harder it is for the newbie to pluck up that courage.

Obviously this doesn't apply to the spammers. I am not an internetty person, or even a computery person, and as such I have never truly understood where the term spam came from. But it still tickles me. It is truly nasty stuff.

Now, I've read the previous posts in this topic. If a shotgun must be used, I implore you to not aim too low.
