I have been honoured by Kent Libraries to be their Chosen One for a year.
To go around singing the praises of libraries and trying to persuade folk that they are good places to visit and not just the haunts of mad people who keep out of the rain there. And to kick off I will be talking the toot at Canterbury Library on 4th August at 6PM.
Mind you it will probably be a lot of the toot that I have previously talked, but if anyone on this site lives near there and fancies coming along, it would be great to meet up.

Now there is a plan Wink i will get my map out and see how far it is from here, i have a feeling it is rather far but not too far Smile

i will tell karen that she needs a rest and that we should maybe go to Canterbury for a few days to chill out and then i might just be walking by the library at around half five and say 'ooh, look, there's Robert.....' She may very well smell the fish by then but the plan will already be Smile

hehe

hopefully see you there Robert

Well, we'll be staying the night, so I hope some folk can join us for a beer after the event.
Does anyone on this forum actually live near Canterbury? (I do have to say that it remains in my memory as the worst signing I ever did. At the Waterstones there I signed three books and one was for a staff member who felt sorry for me. One was a reader and one a stranger who happened by and I persuaded to buy one.
However, that was a long time ago.
So, who lives down that way, eh?

No it is this year in Denver they vote for Melborne they should have no probs in winning that vote, but having said that I supported Chicago in Boston2004 and they lost to Denver by 12 votes they have reduced the time to 2 years instead of three.

Never been there looking forward to the micro breweries which I have heard are quite good and not the usual insipid shite that pases for beer in the states and also to meeting up with some folks I met up with at last years worldcon in Yokahama. Very Happy Drunk

If by near you mean "within 157 miles" than yes, yes I do.

I have the feeling that it might turn out to be a very quiet and intimate gathering at Canterbury, perhaps I'll just take them down to the nearest pub.

Can't make this one as will be on a train home from Newcastle but I love Canterbury. I used to be a regular visitor about 6 or 7 years ago. Some fine pubs and there used to be a mexican restraunt just befor you walk into the main town that served Chocolate mole chicken (thats roasted chicken in a chocolate and chilli sauce) that would melt the teeth in your mouth it was so hot.

An American visitor once asked me directions to the Cathederal. When I pointed to the magnificent buildng directly behind me he said "What that big church?"

I told him they wouldn't let him in in shorts and sent him of to the local suit shop. I can only hope he bought one. Sorry I couldn't help it he annoyed me.

Had a wonderful evening meeting wonderful people, including a publican who let me pull my own pints and drink free.
Good grief.
It was brilliantly organised and a full house.
Good old Canterbury.
