OK folks, time for a bit of a challenge. You need to have and be familiar with Google Earth for this.

For anyone who doesn't know, Google Earth is a rather splendid little program that provides you with a searchable globe which is made up of millions of aerial and satellite photos.

The challenge is this. You have to come as close as you can to finding yourself on Google Earth. Finding your house or place of work alone doesn't count, you have to be able to spot something which proves that you were actually there at the time the photo was taken.

Example: I have found my car parked in the car park at work. The fact that it's in a temporary car park that we had during some building work means that I know exactly which office I would have been in at the time, so I can pinpoint my exact location when the photo was taken.

The first thing you need to establish is when the photos of your particular area were actually taken - the ones used for the North East for example were mostly taken in 2001. Then you have to try and figure out where you might be, and look for proof. Obviously this relies a little bit on honesty.

Anyway, here's mine for starters:

My car is the the green & white Mini at
55 1'17.58"N 130'23.48"W

Which means I am in the office on the 2nd floor of the building here
55 1'15.54"N 130'25.15"W

(If you didn't know this, you can just past these co-ords into Google Earth and it will go there. To get co-ords of your own, create a Placemark in the spot you want people to go to, then edit the place mark, look at the advanced bit, and goto the location tab.)

If no-one knows what the hell Google Earth is, this is all going to die very quickly of course...... Smile

There's not enough detail where I am currently to see anything. I looked for my car outside my parents house in London but it wasn't there, so I checked in Luton where I worked until 3 years ago. All I can tell about that is that the photo was taken after 2002 because the new matalan car park is finished, and that it was taken on a Friday because the car park at work is half empty. All the account managers would have "client meetings" on Fridays but the bosses never seemed to notice the car park was always half empty every Friday.

So I go and download this Google Earth thing and I am disappointed at first.

My villages seems to be a tiny blob of fuzz surrounded by fields (which ok it is)
The town I am forced to live in is represented as a bigger patch of blobs and I can't indentify the street let along suspect charectors next to my car.
The college carpark is empty, but being Corby this is not uncommon.
My old place of employment doesn't even get the fuzz. Apparently I worked on racing cars in a field.

However.
At 51'24'44.06" N 0'10'06.17" W you can clearly see my boyfriends motorbike and side car on his drive! Smile

I fear I live in places to boring for Google Earth.

Some areas are still only shown as pretty fuzzy satellite photos, but they are slowly but surely being updated with aerial photos, so your village should become less fuzzy at some point. Although the aerial photos they eventually use may already be several years old.

Nice one on the motorbike though! Thumbs Up

My school still hasn't got the cage pitch on it and that was there before I started 5 years ago!

Everything's really fuzzy round where I am. I did see a pile of places in Glasgow I know well but not from that angle, but those don't really qualify.

Google Earth is brilliant isn't it? But the pictures around my way must be at least 6-7 years old, I brought up my old house, and the big tree that we had cut down when we moved in in November 2006 was still there.

Couldn't see my car in the car park of my old work, so big brother hasn't caught me yet Cool

OK, I'll bite - How did you move in to your house in November of this year when it's April Shock

Always knew he was temporarily challenged.

He has an unfortunate condition that means he can only remember events that haven'ty happened.

I'll have to ask him if he remembers that time I won the lottery in 2007.

What a fabulous time I will have had when he remembers it. Confused
