A Japanese word that means "transformation" or "aberration" and is used in biology to refer to metamorphosis. However, in colloquial situations it often means "perverted" and is subsequently used in many other countries to refer to anime, manga, and computer games with explicit sexual or pornographic content.

The word is not used this way in Japanese; commonly used terms include "jū hachi kin" (18 prohibited for sale to persons under 18 ), "ecchi/H anime" (sexual/pornographic anime) "eroanime" (derived from erotic anime), or "seinen" (adult, not to be confused with young adult).

The term "hentai" may also be used outside of Japan to refer to pornographic animation in general that is not necessarily anime or manga. This is most often the case if the said animation is an imitation of a pre-existing cartoon or character (e.g. Princess Jasmine hentai)

Now there's an interesting phrase. I don't think I'd ever heard it until recently when my mate Chicken started playing in our Texas Hold 'Em poker games. He has at least one brain fart per game - especially in the on-line games, and now has a post-it on his monitor with "No Brain Farts!" written on it in an effort to curb them!

On the other hand, that's one I've heard since forever.

That entry is slightly misleading. It doesn't explain that ecchi/H is used as an abreviation for hentai, a fact that invalidates its point that hentai is not used to denote pornographic anime in Japan. That's just one example of why librarians, as a rule, have little time and less respect for Wikipedia.

Well go and correct it then! Rolling Eyes

Can't be arsed.

I heard about one librarian who carried out an experiment on Wikipedia. He changed a factually incorrect entry, and then timed how long it took for someone to change it back to the incorrect version. He did it three times, and each time the error was replaced within twelve hours. Wikipedia simply isn't worth the effort to me. Although I did give in to temptation once and corrected a small error in the entry on The Dirtbombs, but that was the exception that proves the rule.

Wikipedia does have people who monitor any changes, and will reverse any changes that they can't confirm to be correct - so it's only ever going to be as accurate as they're prepared to let it be.

A certain person who we all know very well (name begins with 'N' and ends with 'iven') found this out when he got into trouble with the Wiki people for making random bogus but amusing changes to entries.....

One of his bogus edits is still in place, presumably because they can't confirm whether it's bogus or not, or maybe they don't care. See if you can find it, shouldn't be too difficult as it's in an entry which is linked to from elsewhere on this forum...... Wink

Brainfart is one I know exactly where and when I heard it first. May 2000. A friend in SF said it and I laughed for about an hour! Laughing
