Perhaps they should get voted in, have three months to apply their policies to whitehall, and that be it for four years. In the meantime the Politicians we vote for, after the three months go bac kt otheir normal daily lives. We hear nothing until the next election. Should a question arise about a particular policy and its failing, we get told it will be addressed at the next election, no fuss, no bother , peace and quiet politicall fo rthe next four years. Wonderful, The bods at Whitehall run the country with no interference.

See how much more fun it is now.

The article is as follows:

A former mayor lost his council seat after an election was settled by getting the candidates to pick the longest pencil.

St Albans Tory Keith Stammers lost out to Lib Dem Judith Shardlow after their votes were tied at 1,131 each after three recounts.

The local elections saw the Lib Dems take back power at St Albans after losing it to no overall control in 1999.

Lib Dem David Poor, who won the Sopwell seat from Labour, welcomed the result.

"Tonight has been an excellent night. It is excellent work by all the Lib Dems," he said.

That must have been so wonderful for the guy who lost.
Maybe some sort of thinly veiled measure of masculinity. Longest pencil? I think we can all see the metaphor there.

Wonder what Freud would have made of that?

Still though, amusing hats on politicians is great.
Look at how happy Tony Blair is on the above picture.

I wonder if at the time that photo was taken he was watching a newscast showing a levelled Baghdad.

You crazy English. You'd think having a royal family wearing stupid hats would be enough for you, but no, you want the politicians doing it too. Aren't the wigs in court enough? What is it with Brits and silly headgear?

Whigs were the then famous Liberals - they had a controlling majority in Parliament for along time back a few centuries. They were popular. Atleast thats what I remember reading in History at school. Best to Google it these days, you can find anything out with Google, except who's going to play with me willy next week, and is it somebody other than me, its crap for that!
Too much gin.

Well I think some of the ties that politicians wear are silly.
The amusing hats could also be good for maybe keeping things in.

I actually think politicians should have a uniform with army style stripes to show how high up they are. So Tony Blair would have a special hat with all sorts of stripes on it.
Come on, we all know it makes sense to have our leaders in a uniform of some sort.
what uniform do you think they should wear?

I am starting to like this politicians in hats idea less and less for one, exellent reason.

Mussolini.

Great with wardrobe, especially hats, fascist bastard who helped start wars. I'm thinking that's not someone I want my politicians to emulate.

Yes but not everyone who wore a hat was evil.

for example - every member of the village people wore some sort of hat. The thought of the back benchers doing the YMCA during question time is an interesting one that we all need.
