The Robert Rankin and Sproutlore FAQ - V1.1.0

There are many questions which newcomers to the Forum frequently ask. Not all of them have definitive answers, but to save you the bother of asking, we will try to put them all here; where there is no definitive answer we will provide a link to an appropriate discussion thread.

Table of Contents
1. What order are the books in? What order should I read them in? Which books are part of which series?
2. What's your favourite Robert Rankin novel?
3. Who should play the characters in a movie/TV series adaptation of a Robert Rankin novel?
4. Where can I buy Robert Rankin/Sproutlore stuff?
5. If I like Robert Rankin, what other authors/books might I also enjoy?
6. Where can I chat to other members of Sproutlore?
7. Where can I see pictures from the various Sproutlore events?
8. Where can I find out more about this Rankin fellow then?
9. Where did the old forum go?
10. Are any of Robert's books available in foreign language editions?

1. What order are the books in? What order should I read them in? Which books are part of which series?
The general consensus seems to be that it's not hugely important to read the books in a certain order, but if you must, there are two ways to do so. You can either stick to the order in which they were originally published, or you can work your way through the books in a particular trilogy or series.
Note that the the bracketed terms after the listings are links to Amazon where you can purchase the books (PB) = Paperback, (HB) = Hardback, (TPB) = Trade Paperback, (CD) = Audio CD and (AC) = Audio Cassette.
N.B. a small percentage of the purchase price of the books will go to the club if you use these links.

2. What is your favourite Robert Rankin novel?
Clearly there is no definitive answer to this, but we have a thread on the forum for discussion of this topic.

3. Who should play the characters in a movie/TV series adaptation of a Robert Rankin novel?
Again, clearly there is no definitive answer to this, so we have another thread on the forum for discussion of this topic.

4. Where can I buy Robert Rankin/Sproutlore stuff?
The best place to buy Rankin stuff is from our very own SproutShop. We sell badges, books, t-shirts and other items of "Rankinalia"; and of course by buying from us you're helping the club to lay on events and promote Robert's works.
You will also find various items on eBay, and people have been known to post links to their Rankin related auctions on the forum, so keep your eyes peeled.

5. If I like Robert Rankin, what other authors might I also enjoy?
There's two categories here: authors that tend to be compared to Robert, and authors that inspired him.
In category one:

and in category two:

6. Where can I chat to other members of Sproutlore?
Well, here of course; or if you like something a bit more immediate, there's a Sproutlore chat Java applet thing on Rankin fan site ALPHA 17.
Of course, if you're into chatting IRL, then you'll have to come along to one of the events now won't ya?

7. Where can I see pictures from the various Sproutlore events?
Well, there's quite a few on various sites around this here interweb; among them are the following:
[1] If you hunt around on there, you'll also find pics from the Pagan wedding of Tim and Loz McGregor that Robert officiated at, and the Brighton rock club he opened.

8. Where can I find out more about this Rankin fellow then?
Well, I know this great website, I understand they have a biography, reviews, a links page and even apparently a groovy forum where you can chat to other Rankinphiles about... well about just about anything really! In addition to that, there's Robert's Wikipedia article.

9. Where did the old forum go?
It's still here, though you can't post to it any more. The old forum was great, but it was difficult to find things, and when questions about Robert Rankin came up they invariably got lost in the chatter. While we could have patched it up to a certain extent, we wanted to take advantage of the more advanced features available. We hope you agree the move was worthwhile.

10. Are any of Robert's books available in foreign language editions?
We are aware of French and German editions; also, at least one of Robert's novels has also been translated into Polish. although we don't currently have details of this.

French Editions
Bragelonne are Robert's French publishers and at this stage have published the following

  • Le Livre des vérités ultimes (The Book of Ultimate Thruths) (pb)

  • (Il était une fois...) L'Homme le Plus Mieux de Tous les Temps (The Most amazing man who ever lived) (pb)
  • Armageddon, la Comédie Musicale (Armageddon the Musical) (pb)

They are all available through amazon.fr (click the links above to purchase)
